Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

Luke 13:34 (NIV)

Jesus identified himself as having a strong maternal urge to comfort and nurture, when he compared himself here to a mother hen. A hen knows her chicks belong to her. So it is with God. He knows that every person He created is his precious possession. But just as a mother hen cannot force her chicks to come under the comfort and protection of her wings, so God doesnt force us either. It is as if Jesus was speaking on behalf of his Father when He said, how often I have longed to gather. So often through the ages, God was yearning to draw his people to himself. Instead, the people killed the prophets that were sent to reconcile them back to God. Of course, they killed Jesus as well. Leif Hetland, author of Healing the Orphan Spirit, said: Any area of my life that I had not been comfortable with love, I had not been comfortable with God. God wants to cover us with his love. Because the scriptures say that God IS love (1 John 4:16), we can interpret 1 Corinthians 13 in a fresh way by swapping out the word love for God:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (NIV)

Now try: God is patient, God is kind. God does not envy, He does not boast...When we live out of love, we are covered by love and are thus covered by him. The word endures in the above context, comes from the Greek word stego, which means "to roof" or "cover over with a roof". When we love and are filled with God's love, we are under his covering and protection.
